How to Stick to Your 2017 Resolution!

It’s almost that time, guys. Time for you to see the “new year new me” statuses all over your social media feeds. It’s the time of year where everyone all over the world stops for a moment to dedicate themselves to worthy change.

Some people, more often than not, vow to give up fatty foods and get their health in order. Some people think they should go to church more often or hug their loved ones or spend less time at the job.

The start of 2017 is upon us, Miami, and we all want to have a better and more productive year than the one we just left. So why is it that we can start off so strong, so ambitious and so determined but then fail? Why is it so hard to stick to our resolutions?

We’re not sure, but like 2016, failed resolutions will soon be a thing of the past.

 Choose something you actually like!

If you want to lose weight or get healthier in 2017, choose an activity you don’t mind doing! It’s unrealistic to say you’re going to start running every day when you absolutely despise running. If you enjoy dancing, however, it’s more likely that you’ll take up Zumba or Hip Hop dance classes at your local gym. Choosing meals and exercises that you actually enjoy will help you stick with it and eventually see results.

Start small!

Similar to choosing something you like, starting off small makes a world of difference! Instead of vowing to work out 7 days a week, making a commitment of 2 or 3 times per week may be more likely for you. Building on your small victories eventually leads to your resolution becoming part of your every day life.

Change one behavior at a time!

Let’s talk honestly, Miami. You didn’t gain the weight or become a workaholic overnight. Negative habits develop over time, and naturally, good habits develop the same way. If you have several things in your life that you’d like to change in 2017, don’t feel compelled to change them all at the same time. Overworking yourself will only lead to you feeling overwhelmed, which will lead to you needing a break, which could easily lead to the end of your resolution. Divide and conquer, people.

Don’t get down on yourself!

Doing an overhaul on your life is no easy feat, and making mistakes along the way is completely natural! You’re trying to be healthier, and you eat a donut – it’s okay! You’re trying to stick up for yourself more, and you allow someone to cut you in line – that happens too! Changing yourself for the better is a process, and it’s important to remember that.

As long as you get back up on the horse, you’ll be okay!

Find good support!

Again, working on yourself and challenging yourself to be better can be difficult. It’s important to have good support. Whether it’s friends or family or even online support groups, it’s necessary to have someone to turn to. Having people in your corner not only helps you stay accountable, but it creates an interchangeable support system that helps everyone involved stay strong.
