Prince tribute events in Miami and South Florida are being planned all over town.
During his decades in the spotlight, Prince was known for his raw and innovative talent that always kept him pushing the envelope and challenging social norms.
He changed the definition of masculinity. He taught his fans that it was OK to be yourself and be unapologetic about it.
He was celebrated as one of the best guitarists of all time. He was loved by people in the music industry and outside spectators alike.
Prince died Thursday morning at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota. He was 57.
His legacy is one of talent, bravery and philanthropy.
There is no denying his impact on Miami. Several South Florida businesses have already started to organize events to honor that legacy. Here’s a list of the Prince tribute events in Miami that we know about so far:
Jamboree Lounge, 7005 Biscayne Blvd., Miami
They will be playing as many of Prince’s hit music videos as they can get their hands on. Happy Hour starts at 7 pm. The Prince tribute starts at 8 pm.
American Social Brickell, 690 SW 1st Court, Miami
DJ Damion Yancy will be mixing some of Prince’s greatest hits in his honor.
“Join us Saturday night as we pay a special tribute to an American Icon, a pioneer of American music,” they wrote on Facebook.
Thursday, April 28
Gramps, 176 NW 24th St., Miami
For those who love karaoke or are at least willing to give it a shot for Prince, head over to Gramps on Thursday at 8 pm. It’s all Prince hits all night. (Don’t bother asking for anything else. It would be an insult.)
“We don’t have all the Prince songs on karaoke but we can sang along and just cry together,” they wrote on their Facebook event page. “We are so sad.”
Friday, April 29, April 30
O Cinema Wynwood, 90 NW 29th St, Miami
Head on over to O Cinema in Wynwood for a screening of “Purple Rain”. The movie starts at 11:30 pm. Tickets are already on sale and going quickly at O-Cinema.org. Grab them right now before the screening is sold out.
(Update: Friday showing is sold out. Saturday tickets still available.)
Blue Starlite Drive-in, 7271 SW 168th St, Miami
At 8:30 pm on Friday, May 6th, the Blue Starlite Drive-in will host a special screening of “Purple Rain” as well. There will also be a Best of Prince pre-show before the movie. They are calling the event Dearly Beloved: A Drive-in tribute to Prince.
“We would rather be celebrating Prince for a different reason,” they wrote on their website. “We love Prince. “Purple Rain” was one of the first movies we played in our first year in existence… Come together with us for one of these special Drive-in tribute nights to the musician, the actor, the icon, PRINCE.”
Gates open at 7 pm. The pre-show starts at 8:30 pm and the movie screening starts at 9 pm. For tickets and more information, visit their website.
If you’re traveling from out of town, book your stay at the Quality Inn Miami Airport and come celebrate Prince’s legacy among fellow fans the way he deserves to be remembered.
