Art Basel Miami Beach is North America’s most comprehensive contemporary art fair. Since its launch in 2002, it has more than doubled in size and fashioned dozens of satellite fairs, parties, and events. Held at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel Miami Beach will draw more than 73,000 art dealers, artists, collectors, and aficionados from all over the world. Boasting over 500,000 square-feet of exhibition space, this year’s fair will take place December 3-6, 2015.
A sister fair of the original (founded in Switzerland in 1970), the Miami Beach edition has been an annual fixture for over a decade. Created by a trio of Swiss gallerists named Ernst Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner, and Balz Hilt, the fair aims to revitalize and reignite artistic passions. Their vision brought together the artists they embodied, as well as collectors, curators, and critics from all over the globe. Over 16,000 people attended the first Art Basel, deeming it a success.
Over the years, with momentum from Art Basel, Miami has become a thriving arts destination in its own right with a vibrant gallery scene in Wynwood and the opening of the landmark Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Art Basel refers to the fair by the same name held at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but the spirit of Art Basel can be found in venues all throughout the city. The Convention Center space is only the beginning of what goes on during this whirlwind week of gorgeous art and glittering events.
While Art Basel Miami Beach opens to the public on Thursday, Dec. 3 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 6, the social calendar and satellite fair openings start a few days earlier, encapsulating a week that’s known as Miami Art Week.
I think a full week of festivities calls for a stay at one of the best hotels in Miami. Our spacious rooms are a work of art!
