In today’s edition of Miami’s Best Sports Venues, we take a look at American Airlines Arena, not to be confused with Dallas’ American Airlines Center.
Downtown Miami, Florida
Opened in 1999, the AmericanAirlines Arena plays home to The Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association. Although it is only 16 years old, it has seen quite a bit of action, including three NBA Championship seasons.
The arena is a beautiful waterfront sports and entertainment venue that sits long the Biscayne Bay and seats 19,600, features 2,105 club seats, 80 luxury suites and 76 private boxes.
During its 16 year run, AmericanAirlines has seen some of the NBA’s biggest stars play under the bright lights in Miami including Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Shaq, Alonzo Mourning, and Ray Allen among many others. The Miami Heat went on to win it all in 2006, 2012, and 2013 while participating in the 2011 and 2014 NBA finals as well. That’s a lot of high intensity, playoff basketball in one building.
AmericanAirlines Arena also plays home to the Waterfront Theater, the largest in the state of Florida. The theater, which is just a transformation of the arena, can seat between 3,000 and 5,800 offering an intimate theater setting to accommodate a variety of public and private events.
The arena also has a very close relationship with World Wrestling Entertainment, having hosted events in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2012.
The list of artists who have performed in the arena is a who’s who of entertainment: U2, Cher, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, JLo, Madonna, and it also played host to the 2004 and 2005 MTV Video Music Awards.
The NBA season picks back up in October, but entertainment is year-round at AmericanAirlines Arena and is a must-see at night time for any Miami tourist.
