Miami is the home of Champions. With the three professional teams, on collegiate, and more on the way (see: MLS), the city is brimming with sports fever year-round. With that comes electric stadiums that are filled with passion on game day. Today, we’re starting with the granddaddy of them all in Miami, Sun Life Stadium.
Sun Life Stadium
Miami Gardens, Florida
Sun Life Stadium opened in 1987 and currently plays home to the Miami Dolphins, Miami Hurricanes, and the esteemed BCS Orange Bowl. Formerly home to the Miami Marlins, Sun Life Stadium truly has seen and done it all.
While the Miami Dolphins haven’t experienced much success since moving into Sun Life, their brand and image are forever cemented in NFL lore thanks to the 1972 and 1973 NFL Champion Dolphins. The 1972 squad is still the only team to go undefeated through an entire season in NFL history.
Sun Life was also the home of the Florida Marlins, now the Miami Marlins, and played host to two World Series, 1997 and 2003. The Miami Marlins, formed in 1993, won both vs. the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees, respectively.
Since 1996, Sun Life has hosted the Orange Bowl, being selected as the National Championship Game site in both 2009 and 2013.
Not only has the stadium set records for attendance in sports, but the WWE’s WrestleMania XXVIII was held in Sun Life in 2012 and drew 78,363 fans. This event set the record for the highest grossing live event in WWE history, grossing $8.9 million.
Along with major international friendly soccer matches between the likes of Brazil and Colombia, the stadium has hosted premier club matchups such as England-powerhouses Manchester United vs Liverpool.
The stadium is currently undergoing renovations that will be partially completed by the start of the 2015 Miami Dolphins season and fully completed by the 2016 season.
The season is just around the corner and it’s time to plan your visit to one of the greatest venues in all of Florida. With the Miami Dolphins expected to be good this season, there’s no better time to visit!
